"There are so many aspects of our life that are truly, and sometimes secretly, incredible in the grey of day-to-day life. But we often experience a disconnect. Shakespeare writes that “one touch of nature makes the whole world kin.” The outdoors naturally help us to connect in new, meaningful ways. It’s the Kinder Grey Co. mission to embolden these connections.
What I love about the wild is its ability to bring you to the truth of it all. Truth like: beauty and glamour, dependence, adventure. I once heard the founder of Patagonia, Yvon Chouinard, say “the word adventure has gotten overused. For me, when everything goes wrong, that’s when adventure starts.” I think about how many times things go wrong during the work day, on a trip, in a relationship. When that happens, that’s when adventure starts. It’s not the perfect insta-photo, the prettiest table setting, or the most supportive friendship. When real adventure happens, we’re suddenly exposed to our dependence on each other and our desire to really see glory. Every day. Not just on an icy mountaintop or deep in some forest.
Most likely there’s parts of your life you don’t consider adventurous. They’re grey and dingy, and you work really hard to cover it up with something seemingly exciting. What we strive to do is expose that greyness to the light. To adventure together. To take both the grey and the beautiful and bring it to the wild glory of the outdoors. And we want to do it with kindness.
I still work a full time job and take time to goof off with my friends, many of which have contributed to this effort, and so slow growth is just fine with me. Ultimately, as you join with us: you’ll climb mountains, trudge through streams, paddle through the ocean, learn new skills, but you’re going to be okay with coming home. With actually living your life. Your heart is incredibly strong and full of so much wonder. Together, we don’t just want that single mountaintop experience. We want freedom. To experience fullness in every direction, both ups and downs. Not hiding the grey, but allowing kindness to guide us, even unto the end."
